Tom's Take: an early defining moment

Senior co-captain Corey Peters hit the mark in one of his postgame interviews last night.  He said this team can go one of two ways--the performance against Florida can ruin their season or they can grow from it.  I didn't expect Kentucky to beat Florida but I didn't expect the Wildcats to be so completely intimidated.  And that makes this game into an earlier than expected defining moment for this team's season.

This game reminded me of the 2006 loss at LSU.  While last year's thumping at Florida was overwhelming, I didn't see a team so completely intimidated from the start since that night in Baton Rouge.  There was a sliver of encouragement for the Cats in that they did seem to gather themselves and play with more composure in the final three quarters against the Gators, which didn't happen that night at LSU.  Back in '06, the Cats faced a similar fork in the road situation.  That team transformed itself in the wake of its lowest point and that's the challenge that faces the 2009 UK squad.

The list of what needs fixing when you watch the tape of last night's game would be a long one.  But here are two places to start--tackle better and make sure Randall Cobb touches the ball more than five times in 63 plays.   The schedule is brutal in the coming weeks but a great challenge presents a great opportunity.  Kentucky needs to attack Alabama like it belongs on the same field with a great team and that would be something to build on.  These are players that have learned how to win and that should be motivated to avoid a return to the Kentucky of the past.

Tom first I'll just say thanks for the job you do on the radio. I live in Columbus OH with all the Buckeye fans. Hope you know that is not an easy assignment. I had a chance to play NAIA football and helped with my hgh school team for a couple of years. I could not be more proud of the job up to this point coach Brooks and his staff have done. Well he could try harder to watch his language but the product in my eyes has greatly improved. Could I be wrong? I know that all of us see through our own eyes. What I remember growing up was "well its just football anyway" sort of a "big deal" type of attitude towards the football program. Oh by the way I did grow up in KY and only moved to OH 15 years ago. My cousin and I were at the LSU game for the upset and last year we were at the Georgia game. Big Blue looks so much more like a real SEC football team over the past 3 years and now this year as well. We did look bad Saturday no doubt and everyone should know what a challenge we have this Saturday against Bama. That being said I can not for the life of me understand why folks have a hard time seeing the talent level being improved. Could you remind us of the number of players who were drafted to the NFL prior to the bowl teams of recent years compared to some of the players who are now playing in the NFL. Jacob Tame comes to mind, Wesley Woodyard, Myron Pryor, Jeremy Jarmon. I am just saying someone has got to get out in front of the Brooks bashers and bring some perspective to the overall quality of our program. I would like to hear more support and wider ranging views about the obvious improvement to our program. One simple thought comes to mind "I never thought in my lifetime I would hear of KY getting a player named Mr. Football from another State" whether Morgan turns out to be a great player or not this is still a great acomplishment. Maybe I am wrong on this point but it seems to me that UK is a program folks around the country and in the media find pleasure in criticizing. Wrong if not why? Ok I feel better. God bless to everyone and best wishes to UK Football and all of our young people of the Commonwealth. One last thing I think we are going to have a winning record again and beat UT. Mark it down!
