Tom's Take: battles in the trenches

Derrick Ramsey was the Kentucky quarterback the last time the Wildcats won a football game down between the hedges in Athens, GA.  And it says that the chance of Rich Brooks doing something not even Bear Bryant did (matching the 1977's team of winning three straight SEC road games) will hinge on winning the battle at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Georgia looked old school in the second half of the win over Auburn, running the ball on 24 of 33 plays and without A.J. Green at wideout, I'm assuming Mark Richt will follow the same script until Kentucky make him adjust it.  If the Cats can win the battle on first down and get QB Cox into obvious passing matchups, he may revert to some of the mistakes he was mistaking before last week's turnover-free game.  When UK has the ball, Brooks and company have made it clear they know they have to open it up, but they also know that doing that will only serve to enhance their running game.  Even if Morgan Newton is ready for his breakout game, Kentucky will have to run the ball well to win at Georgia.  The last three victories in the series featured eitehr a 100-yard rusher (Derrick Logan in '96 and Alfred Rawls in '88) or a combo (Alfonso Smith and Tony Dixon in '06) that went over 100 yards on the ground.

Ramsey wore number 12, as does Newton, so maybe there's some good karma working for the Cats.
