Tom's Take: bigger bowl still possibleNovember 5th 2009 |

In our weekly "Tom's Topic" poll question, asking what record the Cats will have at the end of the regular season in football, 6-6 is getting the lion's share of the votes. But to me, 7-5 is a real possibility and if Kentucky can get just to that level, they could still win up in something like the Chick-fil-a Bowl in Atlanta. The UK teams of the Rich Brooks' era have had a maddening tendency to throw in one clunker performance each year in a game they could/should win but they have always shown resiliency and toughness that comes from their coach, so don't write them off just yet. After the Alabama game, I said every game but ULM and EKU would likely be decided in the fourth quarter and I still believe that.
How could a 7-5 record get the Cats into a better bowl? It's because of parity in the SEC. You have Florida, Alabama and LSU at the top and Vandy at the bottom and it's possibly that every other team could finish either 6-6 or 7-5. Here are the schedules that those finish with...
Arkansas(4-4): v So Carolina, v. Troy, v. Miss State, @ LSU
Auburn (6-3): v. Furman, @ Georgia, v. Alabama
Georgia (4-4): v. Tenn Tech, v. Auburn,, v. Kentucky, @ Ga Tech
Ole Miss (5-3): v. No Arizona, v. Tennessee, v. LSU, @ Miss State
Miss State (4-5): v. Alabama, @ Arkansas, v. Ole Miss
So Carolina (6-3): @ Arkansas, v. Florida, v. Clemson
Tennessee (4-4): v. Memphis, @ Ole Miss, v. Vandy, @ Kentucky

I think you're right, Tom. As heartbreaking as the loss to MSU was, the season isn't over yet, and Kentucky can finish strong.
