Tom's Take: big-time shot

I'm trying to remember the last time a freshman hit the game-winning shot for Kentucky.  The last one I can remember was a Rodrick Rhodes shot from about the same spot on the floor against Auburn on Senior Day, 1993.  Let's hope this is the first chapter in a short but thick book of great moments for John Wall's career at the University of Kentucky.  Wall is immensely talented but also seems to be mature beyond on his years.  As he was waiting to do his postgame radio interview with Mike Pratt last night, Wall noted that everybody is picking the Cats to go to the Final Four and yet this team has a long way to go.  That's not the kind of thing players--especially a freshman--say very often.  This guy is special and while last night was an indication that Kentucky is a long way from being a Final Four-caliber team at the moment, we also saw enough flashes of what guys like Wall and Demarcus Cousins can do to know that the potential for greatness is there for this team.  Cousins doesn't have the maturity of Wall but there were times when he looked like a man among boys in the paint.
Combine the talent of these rookies with the steadying influence of guys like Patterson and Miller and you have a formula for a special season.

This team has the talent and physical attributes to get to the final four, there's no question about it. Last night's game was a game we lose last year, but this team found a way to win. John brings that never give up attitude to the team and it showed last night. Fighting through adversity is something the majority of the freshman have never experienced, and they came through last night in shining colors. It was a learning experience more than anything else; they should hold this game as a reminder that just because the expectations are there, doesn't mean you can take a night off or you'll get knocked off. Almost happened last night, but we found a way to pull it out in the end, something all championship teams do.
