Tom's Take: defusing the story

Regardless of your politics, "The West Wing" at the least gave us a good glimpse of how things work behind the scenes there and I've often said every coach should have to watch a full season of those shows, to fully appreciate the importance of media relations. If the most powerful man in the world devotes that much time to shaping a message and responding to crises, then it's a good idea for coaches to give some thought to that part of their jobs, too.
By making John Wall available to the media yesterday and by John Calipari explaining the situation, a story of Wall's discontent that quickly went national ended up playing itself out within a 24-hour news cycle instead of dragging out for several days. Media relations is a bigger part of the job at Kentucky than most other programs and this is just another great example of how clearly Calipari understands what it takes to succeed here.
