Tom's Take: killed by the run

For the second time in school history, Kentucky has scored 30 or  more points in four straight SEC games--and the Cats are 1-3 in those games.  If you can't run the ball and, more importantly, if you can't stop the run, you don't win consistently in this league.  And the Cats are getting steamrolled by the run this season.  After a turnover-filled performance, an eight-point drive early in the fourth quarter brought the Cats within 16 and for the first time since the game's opening moments, there was momentum for Big Blue.  Georgia proceeded to run off eight minutes in a spirit-crushing drive for a field goal to end any hopes of another comeback win.  It was the same kind of drive that Auburn used to march almost the length of the field for a game-winning field goal.  There was a total of three pass plays in those two drives, all by Auburn.  And now the Wildcats face the team that, next to Auburn, may have the best rushing attack in the SEC.  Four years ago, a turnaround for Kentucky began with getting more physical.  UK went to Mississippi Stat and shutdown the run and pulled out a crucial victory.  That was a defining moment for that Wildcat team and if this team wants to get to that often-mentioned better bowl, they had better answer the call to run the ball better and defend the run better this coming Saturday.

Please explain why we run a draw on 2nd and a cab ride or 3rd and a cab ride and why are we using a single back set, why not use a blocking back to run, no wonder Turtle didn't want to be a fullback, WE NEVER USE THEM!!! I'll hang up and listen...GO CATS!!

Most teams will call draw plays in those situations because there are just not many pass plays that will get you the needed yardage. You run the draw, get some of the yardage and if you don't make the first down, you've at least gained a little in the field position battle. As for the fulllback question, I guess they're trying to spread out the defense but understand your point because Moncell is such a good blocker.--TL

What you say about our team is true.We have a very good team. The problem we have is the lack of size, strength, and speed. The key is to get to certain points before your opponent does. You can be a little smaller or weaker, but you have to be faster, not only pyhsically but also mentally. this has held true in most all sports over the years. In football if you don't beat your man to key points of position, and then use your smarts to out play him you get beat. this is a lot harder to do than it is to say. It drives coaches nuts. If UK continues to recruit smart you will see a huge difference in the way they focus and finish. It takes a long time to get it right. I think coach Phillips is on the right track to get it done. It takes time and patients. So lets have fun and enjoy it even if it hurts to watch some times.
