Tom's Take: the UK offense

Football fever gets kicked up a notch this week with the annual SEC Media Days event in Birmingham.  Joker Phillips and three of his players (Randall Cobb, Derrick Locke and DeQuin Evans) are scheduled to speak on Wednesday's opening day lineup.   When Joker talked to the UK fan gathering in Middletown, OH Saturday, he expressed confidence in the quarterback position and said they have more than one guy that is capable of leading the team and there are bigger concerns for him.  Defense is probably at the top of that list, given the loss of players like Corey Peters, Trevard Lindley, Micah Johnson and Sam Maxwell.  Those guys' absence creates a big void but to me, quarterback is still the key.  I say that because I go into the season assuming those kinds of losses mean Kentucky is going to have win big games more with its offense than with its defense.  Therefore, the offense can't just be a little bit better--it needs to be significantly better.  And I think it can be, providing one of those quarterbacks really takes charge at that position, the way Andre Woodson did in 2006.  Now, it's important to remember that Woodson blossomed over the course of that season, so don't panic if it takes a little time for a strong leader to emerge.  Randall Cobb told WLEX last week that he doesn't expect to run as much out of the Wildcat formation this fall.  Go back and watch the first half of the South Carolina game last season and you'll see what I think is the kind of offense Joker Phillips wants to see this fall--Hartline was in command at QB and Cobb was utilized in a more diverse way, turning a short pass into a 55-yard gain and gaining big chunks of yardage on a couple of reserves and then lining up in the Wildcat in the red zone.  If we see that offense from that game in the fall of 2010, this team could make some noise in the SEC.

Yes, and both our starting DBs were out so he was matched up with a true Freshman that had only played two years of HS ball. Jeffrey scored three TDs against him and only three more in the other 12 games he played.

No one wants to acknowledge how much the loss of JJ and injuries hurt UK last year, it could have been a magical year. Hope we escape the injury bug this year, but 2011 should be better, our depth is steadily improving.
